Correct pruning is an essential maintenance practice for trees and shrubs in the landscape.  It is not a difficult task to perform, but you have to know when, why and how to prune.  Take flowering trees and shrubs for example, some should be pruned immediately after flowering (crab apples, lilacs, dogwoods, weigela) while others need pruning before spring growth appears (tea roses, hydrangeas, butterfly bush).

It is also important to have the proper tools: hand pruners, hand saws and loppers.  All pruning tools should be sharp and of good quality.
